Why is reducing our sugar intake so important?

This week on social media I have been sharing everything to do with sugar.  How sugar affects our mood, how it affects our sleep, how it affects our productivity each day and so much more.  You can listen to some of those videos by clicking HERE (https://www.facebook.com/suethomaswellbeing) and just scrolling down the page to watch.  There is one on mood, sleep, energy levels and today I will share how sugar affects our IBS!  Make sure you head over to watch some of them!

Why is reducing our sugar intake so important?  For years we have been told that it is fat that is the demon, that keeps us fat, that causes high cholesterol and heart disease.  But spoiler alert it is in reality sugar that causes these problems! If we can break our addiction to sugar (and sweeteners) every day can be so much fuller and more enjoyable!  Our clothes fit better, we feel more confident, we can reduce IBS, get rid of afternoon slumps and be so much more productive – and who wouldn’t want to feel like that?   We could also reverse high blood pressure and high cholesterol and reduce type 2 diabetes.  So why are more of us not doing this?!

The key with giving up or reducing sugar is that it hurts a little bit!  We like the taste of sugar!  It gives us a dopamine hit each time we consume it.  Dopamine is the feel good neurotransmitter, so consuming sugar makes us feel a little bit better! But that pleasure is short lived! And as we crash out of that state of pleasure we crave more!  This sets off a number of hormonal waterfalls in the body that result in us consuming far more than we need!

How many times have you started on a Monday telling yourself you are on a health kick and giving up sugar, but have given in by Wednesday!  Sugar is an addictive substance, and it causes so many problems in the body if consumed in excess.

You might also be craving sugar because of a yeast over growth in your intestine.  The intestine is directly linked to the brain and yeast needs sugar to survive.  If the yeast is dominating the communication between the gut and brain sometimes sugar cravings are almost out of our control!

So what can be done?  We need to cut the sugar completely!  No matter how much we crave it, the only way to stop the cravings is to break the cycle.  And this can be hard if we are doing it alone.  So why not join my next Sugar Free and Fabulous 7 day challenge next week starting April 12th? A week of women working together all with the aim of cutting their sugar intake so that they can live a fuller and more confident life!  You can join the challenge by clicking HERE.

It would be so lovely to see you there!  And even if you don’t feel you are addicted to sugar sometimes just going sugar free for 7 days can give you a real energy boost – just in time for spring!

Don’t forget to click HERE to join the group and hope to see you there over the weekend – ready to start on Monday morning!

Have a great April – and don’t forget to check out some of the sugar videos I talked about at the start!
